SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Russell Means never shunned attention. Whether leading Native Americans in railing against broken federal treaties, appearing in a Hollywood blockbuster or advocating a sovereign American Indian nation within U.S. borders, the activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee reveled in the spotlight.

But it was only on his terms. Openly critical of mainstream media, the onetime leader of the American Indian Movement often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his personal website.

When he did speak out publicly, he remained steadfast in his defense of AIM. He found himself dogged for decades by questions about the group's alleged involvement in the slaying of a tribe member and the several gun battles with federal officers during the 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, but denied the group ever promoted violence.

"You people who want to continue to put AIM in this certain pocket of illegality, I can't stand you people," Means said, lashing out an at audience member question during an April gathering commemorating the uprising's 40th anniversary. "I wish I was a little bit healthier and a little bit younger, because I wouldn't just talk."

Means, who announced in August 2011 that he had developed inoperable throat cancer but told The Associated Press he was forgoing mainstream medical treatments in favor of traditional American Indian remedies, died early Monday at his ranch in in Porcupine, S.D., Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said. He was 72.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Means grew up in the San Francisco area before becoming an early leader of AIM. He often was embroiled in controversy, partly because of AIM's alleged involvement in the 1975 slaying of Annie Mae Aquash.

But Means also was known for his role in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans" and had run unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988.

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to protest the U.S. government's treatment of Native Americans and demand the government honor its treaties with Indian tribes. Means told the AP in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Paul DeMain, editor of News from Indian Country, said there were plenty of Indian activists before AIM but that the group became the "radical media gorilla."

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-second clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means and AIM co-founder Dennis Banks were charged in 1974 for their role in the Wounded Knee uprising, but after a trial that lasted several months, a judge threw the charges out on grounds of government misconduct.

Means said he felt his most important accomplishment was the founding of the Republic of Lakotah and the "re-establishment of our freedom to be responsible" as a sovereign nation inside the borders of the United States. His efforts to have his proposed country recognized by the international community continued at the United Nations, he said, even as it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux Tribe.

But others may remember him for his former organization's connection to Aquash's slaying. Her death remains synonymous with AIM and its often-violent clashes with federal agents in the 1970s.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant. Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? were both eventually convicted of murder. The third has never been charged.

Means blamed Vernon Bellecourt, another AIM leader, for ordering Aquash's killing. Bellecourt denied the allegations in a 2004 interview, four years before he died.

DeMain, an Indian journalist who researched the case, said AIM's leaders know who ordered Aquash's killing but have covered up the truth for decades.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of Martin Montileaux of Kyle at the Longbranch Saloon in Scenic. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

In addition to his presidential bid, Means also briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984, joining the Larry Flynt ticket during the Hustler magazine publisher's unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination. Flynt was typically a Democrat.

But Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves either a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

His acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Salomon, the tribal spokeswoman, called Means' death a "great loss" for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Means' death came a day after former U.S. Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with U.S. Sen. James Abourezk during the 71-day takeover to try to negotiate an end.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday morning. "I don't pretend to understand it."

(AP) ? A Wisconsin woman whose husband killed her and two others at the spa where she worked said he threatened to throw acid in her face and jealously terrorized her "every waking moment," according to court documents.

Authorities say Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, killed three women, including his 42-year-old wife, Zina Haughton, and wounded four others Sunday before turning the gun on himself.

The Waukesha County medical examiner's office on Monday identified the dead as Zina Haughton; Cary L. Robuck, 35, of Racine; and Maelyn M. Lind, 38, of Oconomowoc. All were found in the spa.

In a written request for a restraining order filed Oct. 8, Zina Haughton said her husband was convinced she was cheating on him and that aside from the acid threat he also vowed to burn her and her family with gas. He said he would kill her if she ever left him or called the police, according to the court papers obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

"His threats terrorize my every waking moment," she wrote.

In a separate police report, she said the couple was in the process of getting a divorce and "we are always arguing."

Haughton was arrested earlier this month for slashing his wife's tires; she was granted a four-year restraining order on Thursday.

Under the order, Haughton was prohibited from owning a firearm.

Police responded last year to reports of domestic violence at the Haughtons' home in Brown Deer. Zina Haughton called 911 saying her enraged husband had thrown her clothes and bedding into the yard and doused her vehicle with tomato juice. Radcliffe Haughton was charged with disorderly conduct, but the charge was later dismissed because a witness failed to appear in court.

Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said he wasn't aware of a motive in Sunday's shooting.

A .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun was used in the attack, said agent Tom Ahern, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A spokeswoman at Froedtert Hospital, where the injured were taken, said one of the four women remained in critical condition early Monday. Kathy Sieja said the three other women were in satisfactory condition.

Ernest J. Polk, a neighbor who lives across the street from the Haughtons, said the couple was generally friendly to him but he saw signs of turmoil.

"There was always confrontation over there, but I never thought it would come to this," he said. "... It was mostly verbal. I didn't see anything physical."

Customers described Zina Haughton was a popular hair stylist who decorated her work station with photos of her two daughters.

"She was a wonderful mom," Kristin Guadagno told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "She had two daughters who were the foundation of her family. She was their everything. She worked so many hours every week to provide for them and take them on nice trips."

The shootings that happened about 11 a.m. Sunday triggered chaos in the commercial area around the spa. Believing Haughton had fled, police began a massive, six-hour search that locked down a nearby mall, country club and hospital.

Tushaus said later that a fire in the spa, discovery of a propane tank initially believed to be an improvised explosive device and the layout of the building, with many small rooms and locked areas, all slowed officers' search and delayed the discovery of the gunman's body.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

South Korean activists banned from flying leaflets

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea banned activists Monday from entering a border area where they planned to launch anti-Pyongyang leaflets into North Korea, an unusual move that the activists likened to surrender.

North Korea's military warned last week that it would strike if South Korean activists carried through with their plan to fly balloons carrying the propaganda leaflets across the border. South Korea pledged to retaliate if it was attacked.

South Korean police said they sent hundreds of officers to seal off roads and prevent activists and other people from gathering at the launch site due to security concerns. Residents in the area were also asked to evacuate to underground facilities, according to local official Kim Jin-a.

Before Monday's action, the government had implored activists to stop their campaign, but had cited freedom of speech in not making further attempts to intervene.

South Korean activists have in the past sent leaflets across the border, and North Korea has issued similar threats without following through. But Seoul's Yonhap news agency reported Monday that the ban on entering the border area was imposed as South Korea detected that North Korea had uncovered artillery muzzle covers and deployed troops to artillery positions in possible preparation for an attack. Yonhap cited no source for the information.

South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters Monday that North Korea was believed to have acted in line with carrying out its warning. He declined to elaborate on the North's army movement as that was confidential military information.

South Korea had bolstered its military readiness following the North's threat and would "strongly" retaliate if attacked, Kim said.

Dozens of activists, mostly North Korean defectors, planned to float balloons carrying about 200,000 leaflets critical of North Korea's young leader Kim Jong Un and his country's nuclear weapons program.

Lead activist Park Sang-hak said the entry ban was tantamount to yielding to Pyongyang's threat and his group would try to find another place to float leaflets.

"It's surrender. It's clearly surrender," he said.

Ties between the rival Koreas were badly strained after two deadly attacks blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in 2010.

The Korean Peninsula officially remains at war because an armed conflict in the 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Arizona courts to decide legal theory in breach of contract case ...

One of the great qualities of the law is that it can adapt to new circumstances. Technological changes have forced courts to reevaluate how long-standing rules and principles should be applied in modern times. For example, the rules of contract law have been developed by cases over the course of centuries. Now Arizona courts have a role to play in the evolution of these rules, as they must discern what effect an e-mail can have in a contract dispute.

The particular case under consideration involves a couple and their supposed real estate agent. In connection with a search for a new home, the agent sent the couple a contract for them to sign, which named the woman as the couple's exclusive real estate agent. The couple signed the document and e-mailed it as an attachment to the agent, who then failed to sign it. She did send an e-mail response, however, that acknowledged its receipt and thanked the couple.

Later on, while the agreement was purportedly in effect, the couple bought a house in the territory covered by the contract. Arguing that the couple had breached the contract by using another broker, the agent sued the couple.

Under Arizona law, a real estate contract must be signed by both parties in order to be valid. The issue in the case is therefore whether the agent's e-mail response meets the legal definition of a signature, rendering the contract enforceable. Arizona has recognized that electronic signatures are acceptable alternatives to the traditional ink-and-paper.

But whether an e-mail can be considered an electronic signature is not something our courts have decided. Courts in other states have reached differing conclusions on the matter. The Arizona Court of Appeals is expected to take up consideration of the case after it returns from remand to the trial court.

Takeaway: Is Apple really about to launch a smaller tablet? If it is, the iPad maker will have to overcome a number of hurdles to succeed.

We?re just a few short weeks out from an eagerly awaited Apple product launch and some of us are already getting excited about another.

Apple has called another media event for 23 October. If you don?t know what it?s likely to be about, you?ve probably been abstaining from the internet for the past three months.

The iPhone 5 is still difficult to get hold of in some areas after a record-breaking launch weekend. But - if that is even possible - the announcement predicted by pretty much everyone in the technology industry of a smaller iPad is even more keenly anticipated.

Again, the doubling-down on secrets that Tim Cook promised has failed to materialise. Like the iPhone 5 before it, the iPad mini has been the worst-kept secret in tech for many months and viewed as common knowledge for the past few.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the smaller tablet device back in February. Since then, every tech site and blogger has talked in increasingly assured terms about the new device.

Most are calling it the iPad mini, or possibly the iPad nano. It?s also conceivable there is no product, as some have argued - but let?s face it, they?re fooling no one. For the sake of clarity, we?ll refer to the phantom device as the iPad mini.

Apple?s manufacturers in overdrive

Multiple reports claim Apple?s manufacturers have gone into overdrive creating the devices ahead of the 23 October unveiling. The Wall Street Journal goes as far as to claim Apple has ordered 10 million units from suppliers as we head into the hugely lucrative holiday season. A new iPhone and a new iPad? It?s going to be some holiday season in Cupertino.

However, the new product represents more of a challenge for Apple than meets the eye.

When the iPad arrived, the market consisted of it and some tumbleweed. Two iterations later and the market is still dominated by the iPad. There are also a host of other devices from other manufacturers, which are struggling to make inroads into Apple?s lead.

The iPad mini faces a different challenge from its larger cousin, which lest we forget is not even three years old.

If it comes to pass, the iPad mini will represent Apple?s most challenging and potentially risky product launch for some time.

Risk 1. Stiffer competition

First, the smaller screen tablet market is very different from the field the iPad entered in 2010. There are a number of interesting devices from leading manufacturers that are already laying claim to the space.

Samsung was the first major competitor to arrive with the seven-inch Galaxy Tab. Now there are a number of heavyweight competitors in the market - most notably Amazon and Google - both of whom have won plaudits for their devices. So unlike the larger iPad, Apple will face stiffer competition from the outset.

Risk 2. Price and Apple margins

Second is the matter of price. Apple enjoys high profit margins on all its products but price will be a key consideration for consumers.

The iPad 2 currently costs $399, or ?329 in the UK. The new iPod Touch starts at $299 and ?249, while the 8GB Nexus 7 is sold for $230 and ?159 and the $174 ad-free Kindle Fire will shortly be available in the UK for ?169.

Amazon admitted to the BBC recently that it made no money from Kindle hardware, instead driving revenue from its content ecosystem. Apple will want the best of both worlds and enter a market just for the sake of being in there, especially one that so far has not been commercially a runaway success compared with the iPad?s.

My feeling is that Apple won?t try and compete on price but will retain its margins and hope its brand and residual halo effect convince enough consumers to pay that little bit extra.

Risk 3. Cannibalising the iPad

There?s the risk that Apple may end up cannibalising sales of other iOS devices with the iPad mini. But the Apple philosophy is that it?s better to cannibalise your own product with another of your own. Jobs told his biographer: ?If you don?t cannibalise yourself, someone else will.?

Risk 4. Inferior screen resolution

Fourth, we come to the screen. One school of thought believes the iPad mini will launch without a so-called Retina display, an Apple marketing term to designate the high-resolution screen that first appeared on the iPhone 4 and has since spread to other devices including the iPad, iPod Touch and 15-inch MacBook Pro.

A smaller 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is also widely expected for the 23 October event but a common theory is that the 7.85-inch iPad mini will have a resolution of 1,024?768 - half that of the current iPad. The thinking is that this will allow developers to scale existing apps for the smaller device.

Apple has made the Retina Display a key marketing tool for its products. There?s no doubt that a smaller resolution display on a device with a screen size between others with a Retina Display will be perceived as step back for the company.

Risk 5. Damaging Apple?s user experience

Finally, there?s the user experience. Steve Jobs was less than complimentary about the seven-inch form factor, describing devices as being dead on arrival and complaining that users needed to sandpaper their fingers to scale down to the smaller form.

This pronouncement may have been Jobs being Jobs - after all, he flatly denied Apple was working on a tablet a number of times. However, combine the smaller screen real estate along with the possible lack of a Retina display and you have a number of criteria eating away at the overall quality of the user experience. Just scaling down apps for smaller screens may not be enough. iPhone apps mostly scale terribly to the iPad. Developers may have more work to do for the smaller iPad.

Despite the risks, it?s difficult to bet against Apple at the moment and 10 million sales of iPads heading into the holiday season doesn?t seem that outlandish.

However, we?re in for an interesting quarter if and when the device is unveiled on 23 October. The tech community loves to criticise the top player and how Apple deals with each of the five risks above will be key.

Will the competition prove more challenging than in the existing market? Will it be too expensive compared with competitors? Will the smaller iPad gnaw away at sales of its big brother or the iPod touch? Will an inferior screen resolution put users off? Will it fall short of the standards Apple sets for its products? user experience?

The iPad mini may well prove to be the trickiest balancing act of features and marketing that Apple has attempted in some time.

Australia, India to begin uranium talks

Australia eyes eventually exporting uranium to India for its nuclear plants. With 40 percent of the world's uranium reserves and strict rules on exports, Australia expects the talks to last a year or more.

By Nirmala George,?Associated Press / October 18, 2012

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, left, shakes hands with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after a meeting in New Delhi, India, Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012. The two nations have agreed to begin negotiations on selling Australian uranium to energy-starved India.

India and Australia agreed Wednesday to begin negotiations on civil nuclear energy cooperation that would eventually allow the export of Australian?uranium?to the energy-starved South Asian nation.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard met with her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on the last day of a three-day visit. They discussed strategic and economic ties in addition to nuclear energy.

Singh said Australia's agreement to start negotiations that would lead to the sale of?uranium?was a "recognition of India's energy needs as well as our record and credentials."

Australia has had a long-standing ban on exporting?uranium?to countries that have not signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. India is among those countries.

Australia has 40 percent of the world's known?uranium?reserves but sells?uranium?only for power generation under strict conditions.

India has been desperately seeking?uranium?sources to run its nuclear power plants, and Australia's past refusal to sell the mineral has been a sore point in relations between the two countries.

India has refused to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, saying it discriminates against countries that carried out tests after the treaty came into force in 1970.

Uranium?sales to India will be possible once the two countries reach agreement on a nuclear safeguard arrangement, with India giving assurances that the?uranium?will not be diverted to its military program.

Earlier Wednesday Gillard told business leaders in New Delhi that there was "good potential for partnership in the energy sector."

Gillard said she expects discussions on?uranium?sales to last one to two years.

The two leaders also discussed defense cooperation, terrorism and ways to boost trade.

"We want to work together to strengthen our economic partnership and strengthen our strategic partnership," Gillard said.

Trade between the two countries grew from $4 billion in 2000 to more than $20 billion last year. India is Australia's fourth-biggest market, and trade is expected to double to $40 billion by 2015.

"There is great potential to further strengthen India-Australian bilateral trade and investment," Singh told reporters.

Australian universities are trying hard to entice Indian students to return to Australia to pursue college or professional degrees. The number of Indian students studying in Australia fell after a series of racial attacks that spiked in 2009.

Gillard also announced that Australia will confer its highest civilian honor, the Order of Australia, on Indian cricket wizard Sachin Tendulkar, a decision that will go down well in cricket-mad India.

"This is a very special honor that is very rarely awarded to someone who is not an Australian citizen," Gillard said.

The evolution of SEAL Team Six

How the celebrated unit went from being a ragtag band of outlaws to America's go-to guys

This week, SEAL Team Six once again finds itself in the sunlight as Mark Bowden, the celebrated journalist behind Black Hawk Down, applies his talents to the Abbottabad raid that ended with the death of Osama bin Laden. The novel Tier One Wild by Dalton Fury, a former Delta Force commander, further widens the aperture. These books come only a month after the publication of No Easy Day by Mark Bissonnette, the former SEAL Team Six member who actually put bullets in bin Laden's still-twitching body.

A third book hitting Kindles this week has a slightly lower profile, but a warmer welcome in many circles of the special operations community. Chris Martin, who previously covered Delta Force to great acclaim, has turned his sights to the SEALs with Beyond Neptune Spear: The (Open) Secret History of SEAL Team Six, Post-9/11. Martin has written perhaps the most thorough history of the unit in print to date.

SEE MORE: No Easy Day: 5 revelations from a Navy SEAL's bin Laden book

(For the record, there is technically no such unit as SEAL Team Six. Not anymore, anyway. It's been 25 years since the Naval Special Warfare Development Group was officially known as SEAL Team Six, and yet the moniker has reached such heights in popular culture that the unit will probably never leave the name behind entirely.)

But name-related semantics aside: As far as unacknowledged units go, SEAL Team Six is a pretty lousy secret, especially when compared to such special mission units as the Intelligence Support Activity, or such covert organizations as the National Underwater Reconnaissance Office. But the acute interest in the SEALs is a result of their own high-profile successes and rigid professionalism. It wasn't always that way, however.?

SEE MORE: The many threats facing the Navy SEALs' tell-all author: A guide

Cloaked in secrecy and with a lightly defined mission, it didn't take long for the unit to break practically every rule it could find.

Richard Marcinko built SEAL Team Six in a very short amount of time, and the unit proved highly effective even from the earliest days. But cloaked in secrecy and with a lightly defined mission, it didn't take long for the unit to break practically every rule it could find and spend money freely and questionably. As Chris Martin details, when Marcinko (reluctantly) handed over command of his "personal fiefdom" to Robert Gormly, the new commander was warned about "the unit's actual state of readiness, which had been hidden behind a cloak of bluster and secrecy. Six's [executive officer] informed him the team lacked discipline and that its training had been substandard; under Marcinko's watch exercises were rarely completed because 'as soon as things got tough, Dick would step in, abort the exercise, and take the troops drinking.' Another former [SEAL Team Six] officer told similar tales of dysfunction, damning the unit in the early days as 'all show, no go.'" (Marcinko, a combat hero and special operations commander with almost unrivaled prescience, would later go to federal prison for defrauding the government.)

I asked Martin how the unit went from being a band of outlaws to America's go-to guys. "It was a long, hard road that took decades to accomplish," he said. "It required strong leaders who pointed the operators in the right direction, and instilled the realization and acceptance that the unit hadn't always lived up to its hype and the required adjustments to correct that." Post-9/11 budgetary expansions helped, as did the exponential increase of operations experience that followed. How important was that experience? Consider that before al Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, neither SEAL Team Six nor Delta Force had ever actually pursued a terrorist cell (as we define them today).?

Martin continued: "SEAL Team Six as it exists now is a long way from the early 'outlaw' days but there's still an edge to the unit. There's still some cowboy DNA in there." As for how it got the Osama bin Laden raid over Delta Force, which many feel was the more obvious choice for the mission, "You can certainly make the argument that they were in the right place at the right time to get Osama bin Laden because they had been forced to play second fiddle to Delta Force throughout much of the war on terror. It's not quite as black and white as that, but essentially SEAL Team Six got 'stuck' with Afghanistan because Delta wanted Iraq, which was where the really serious action was for years. And to its credit, SEAL Team Six made the most of that opportunity, and was well poised to capitalize when focus shifted back to Afghanistan."

While Neptune Spear has cemented the unit's esteemed place in American military lore, the mission only scarcely touches on SEAL Team Six's extraordinary skill set. I asked Martin about notable missions we might not know about, and he mentioned Octave Fusion, in which SEALs rescued two aid workers that had been kidnapped in the horn of Africa. "You had a team from SEAL Team Six parachute into what's a hostile land but not an acknowledged war zone in Somalia. They then silently trekked for a couple miles before neutralizing an entire camp of pirates who didn't know what hit them. The black helicopters came in and they disappeared back into the night, both hostages safely in tow. Operations don't get much more textbook than that."

Has all this attention hurt the unit? According to Martin, "There has been some talk that SEAL Team Six could be sidelined to some degree as a result. If you can't trust a unit to keep quiet about a clandestine operation, you send one you can, especially when it's JSOC we're talking about and there are other options every bit as capable. That said, I imagine before long, any changes going forward regarding SEAL Team Six's operational tempo will be decided more by what's going on around the globe than in the newspapers. But it goes both ways. Despite the outcry, there are benefits for the SEALs to be had too. The interest fuels budgets and recruitment."

One reason that members of the special operations community have embraced Martin's work is that he sidesteps operations security issues by carefully drawing his research from open source material, with occasional guidance from operators to confirm certain suspicions. This respect for OPSEC is perhaps in part because of his lineage ? his father is a former member of Special Forces and was a MACV-SOG commando in Vietnam. Martin's reporting is unflinching, though it is clear he holds the operators of the Joint Special Operations Command in high regard. "It's pretty remarkable ? these are people who train harder and are as skilled at what they do as anyone is at any profession. And what they do is more dangerous than most of us can comprehend. It's also inherently glamorous ? or would be anyway; it's the type of stuff movie stars get paid fortunes to pretend they do and what millions of people shell out their hard-earned dollars to simulate in video games. And yet Delta and SEAL Team Six operators sign up for the job not only accepting that most of what they do will never been celebrated (or even acknowledged), but embracing that fact."

Say Anything Why Is Heidi Heitkamp Buying Health Insurance From ...

After Heidi Heitkamp refused to release it to the media earlier this week, the FEC has made her October quarterly campaign disclosure report available on the internet. You can read all 1,443 pages of it here (interesting note, Heitkamp spent more than she raised again last quarter), but while scrolling through it something interesting caught my eye.

Heitkamp?s campaign made a disbursement to the Environmental Law & Policy Center in Chicago for ?health insurance.?

I thought that might be a mistake, that maybe somebody in Heitkamp?s campaign put the disbursement in the wrong category, but the campaign has made other disbursements to the same group for the same amount on at least four other occasions, and each was for the purpose of ?health insurance.?

Here are entries for March, April, May and June of this year.

Who is the Environmental Law & Policy Center? Here?s their website. They have an office in Jamestown, ND and engage in about what you?d expect an environmental activist group to do. They fight coal mining. They support expensive ?green energy? mandates. They oppose fracking, though it doesn?t appear as though the North Dakota chapter has done so, but last year they teamed up with the Dakota Resource Council here in the state (the group that is suing members of the Public Service Commission to remove North Dakota?s local control of surface mining) on environmental issues in the Bakken oil patch.

The question is, why is Heitkamp paying this group for health insurance? A search of North Dakota?s licensed insurance agencies indicates that they aren?t licensed to sell insurance. The only conclusion I can draw is that this group has put some of Heitkamp?s staff on their group insurance policy, and Heitkamp?s campaign is reimbursing them.

Which would be?odd.

Heitkamp has worked long and hard to put distance between her self and environmental activism. She?s cast herself as oil and coal friendly, and even gone so far as to attack the Obama administration for its positions on environmental policy.

But apparently she has such a cozy relationship with this group she can put her campaign staff on their insurance policy.

I placed calls to both the Jamestown, ND office for this group and their Chicago headquarters and haven?t received a call back from either.

This arrangement doesn?t reflect well on this group either. They?re a non-profit, which means that they must steer clear of partisan politics, yet apparently they?re allowing a partisan Senate candidate put her campaign staff on their insurance policy.

Little Things Aren't Such Little Things ? Business Management ...

I live in Indianapolis, Ind. When I travel and people find out where I live, one of the questions I get asked is, ?Have you ever been to the Indianapolis 500?? The answer is, yes I have. I?ve been purely as a spectator. In 1986 I was there as a part of the Purdue All American Marching Band, marching on the track and playing "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Back Home Again in Indiana" before the race.

While I don?t go every year, the race that I most wish I had attended was in 2006. Why 2006? Because the finish was so spectacular and so close. I watched it on TV, but it isn?t the same as having been there.

How close was it? Sam Hornish Jr. edged Marco Andretti by .0635 of a second ? 500 miles and a difference of .0635 second.

For the victory, Sam Hornish will always be known as a winner of the Indianapolis 500, will have his face on the Borg Warner Trophy (one of the most famous trophies in all of sports) and he received a check for $1,744,855. Andretti, for his amazing second place finish received a check too ? except his was for $698,505.

$1,046,350 for a difference of .0635 second. (That?s almost a billion dollars/hour!)

Was Hornish a million dollars better of a driver than Andretti that day (or any day)? You wouldn?t think so, yet that was the difference in their checks.

How much is .0635 second? An average eye blink takes .5 second.

Do you think that Andretti?s crew and he himself thought of many little things that might have made the difference between making history and being a footnote? Any one of those infinitesimally little things could have made the difference.

I could share other stories to make this same point ? but all of them would lead to one of my favorite quotes from the very quotable Bruce Barton, a businessman and Congressman. He said: ?Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things - a chance word, a tap on the shoulder, or a penny dropped on a newsstand - I am tempted to think - there are no little things.?

What do you bet Marco Andretti would agree?

A number of years ago a very popular book was written that urged us not to sweat the small stuff. I understand the lesson and logic in that message, yet, I believe as leaders, it is the message of the 2006 Indy 500 that is more important ? maybe there isn?t any small stuff.

Yes, we have to pick our spots. As leaders one of those places is in how we coach and delegate. Too often leaders micro-manage people and projects, trying to get things ?just right.? While there is nothing wrong with that intention, I would propose that in getting that 1% improvement by doing it our way (which might not even be an improvement at all), we run the risk of alienating or discouraging those we have given responsibility to, which may also seem like a small thing, but is likely a much bigger thing with bigger implications than the small improvement we were trying to secure.

What are some of the little things for us to think about and consider as leaders?

  • Our attitude
  • Our support
  • Our example
  • Our belief in the project or people
  • Our willingness to listen

These are but a few examples of little things that make a huge difference in the results we can achieve.

When was the last time you asked someone?s opinion, listened and then took their advice?

When was the last time you said thank you to someone in another department?

When was the last time you helped someone take a task off of their to-do list?

When was the last time you smiled and said good morning?

When was the last time you told someone specifically what they were doing well?

I could go on, but must I?

Napoleon Hill wrote ?little hinges swing big doors.? As leaders we are trying to swing big doors ? improve our businesses or departments, make a better product or service, and a hundred other things. All of them are the things that can make a difference in the world around us. And while it takes big ideas, the details matter too. The little things make a bigger difference than we think about or remember.

Remarkable Principle: Little things can make a huge difference. As a Remarkable Leader we must both remember that and identify which little things will contribute to that difference.
